Students who have never studied for ACT Science usually give one of two reasons: they think you cannot study for it, or they think you would have to relearn three years of biology to try.
Both are wrong, and in the same way. The section is not testing what you know about enzymes. It is testing whether you can read a figure under time pressure.
The rule that changes your score
Almost everything you need is printed on the page in front of you. If you catch yourself reasoning from memory, stop and go back to the data.
The handful of questions that do want outside knowledge want the kind you already have: water freezes at 0 °C, denser objects sink, pH below 7 is acidic. That is the level. Nothing is hiding in a textbook you did not read.
Three passage shapes, three speeds
Data Representation. Tables and graphs, a short intro, five or six questions. Mostly lookups. The fastest points on the test.
Research Summaries. Two or three experiments described in sequence, six or seven questions. The work is keeping straight what changed between them.
Conflicting Viewpoints. Two or three scientists arguing about one observation, about seven questions. The most reading, the least data.
They are worth the same and they do not cost the same. Most students should do Conflicting Viewpoints last: it is the one passage where you genuinely have to read every word, and it pays exactly what a fifteen-second lookup pays.
Read the axes before the prose
The intro paragraph is scene-setting. The figure is the test. Before question one, spend fifteen seconds per figure naming four things:
- What is on the x axis, and in what units
- What is on the y axis, and in what units
- Which way the line or the column goes
- If there are two figures, what variable they share
That fourth one is the whole method for the hardest question type. Two-figure questions are always joined by one shared variable: you read it out of the first figure and enter the second with it. If you cannot name the bridge, you are not ready to answer yet.
The sentence that kills three options
"It has to be between these two."
Most numeric questions are interpolation: they ask for a value between two rows you already have. If a 0.50 mm tube gives 29.8 and a 0.75 mm tube gives 19.8, then 0.60 mm has to land between them. You can very often pick the answer with no arithmetic at all.
Extrapolation, which asks for a value beyond the table, works the same way in reverse: your answer must sit outside every value listed.
Conflicting Viewpoints has four recycled traps
Once you can name them they stop working.
- Right idea, wrong scientist. A real claim from the passage, attached to the wrong person.
- True but irrelevant. Correct about the data, but it does not touch the claim in question.
- Restates the observation. Repeats the thing everybody already agrees on, so it supports nobody.
- Too strong. "Proves", "never", "in all cases", when the scientist argued for a tendency.
The third one catches good students, because the statement is definitely true. True was never the test. The test is whether it separates the two views.
Is it even worth sitting?
Science is optional now and does not count toward your composite, which averages English, Math and Reading. It does produce a STEM score alongside Math.
The practical argument for sitting it: it is the section nobody trains, which makes it unusually improvable, and it is the one where a method beats aptitude most reliably.
